Bonobos, which are related to chimpanzees, are believed to understand that shaking your head means ‘no’ according to new research.

Scientists in Germany have filmed the bonobos appearing to indicate no with a shake of their head.

The action was filmed on a number of occasions at Leipzig zoo when bonobos were trying to stop other animals behaving in a certain way. For example, a baby bonobo was playing with its food, its mother tried to stop it but the baby ignored her. Eventually the mother shook her head as if to say no, and took the food away.
